TIER III Data Center Design Explained
A TIER III data center, as defined by the Uptime Institute, is built to ensure concurrent maintainability, meaning any critical component—such as power or cooling—can be taken offline for maintenance without disrupting operations. The design requires N+1 redundancy, where N represents the necessary capacity to support the IT load, and +1 indicates an additional backup component to maintain uptime during maintenance or failure. Multiple, independent power and cooling distribution paths are built in, although only one is active at any given time.
