Digital Realty STO2, formerly known as Interxion STO2, is a premier data center situated 15km north of Stockholm in Kista, the heart of Sweden's ICT industry. Following Digital Realty’s acquisition of Interxion, the facility was rebranded in 2022 to align with its global standards. The building spans a total of 2,200 square meters, with 1,254 square meters dedicated to fully built-out whitespace. This strategic location provides businesses with a high-performance environment designed to support the growing demands of the Nordic digital economy.
To accommodate varying business scales, STO2 offers a comprehensive range of physical housing solutions. Clients can choose from Full Cabinets for dedicated hardware or Partial Cabinets and Shared Rackspace for smaller deployments. For enterprises requiring higher levels of isolation, the facility provides Cages, Suites, and custom Footprints. This flexibility allows organizations to scale their physical presence seamlessly as their data requirements grow, ensuring that both startups and large-scale enterprises find a suitable home for their infrastructure.
The facility acts as a dense connectivity hub, hosting a community of over 45 network providers, including carriers and ISPs. Tenants benefit from direct access to the Swedish Internet Exchange (Netnod), which significantly reduces the cost of network access while improving latency. The infrastructure is designed with dual-entry fiber and SLA-based cross-connects to ensure path diversity. This ecosystem is particularly beneficial for participants who require rapid, reliable data exchange across the Nordics and beyond.
With a fully built-out power capacity of 1.8 MW, STO2 is engineered for maximum uptime. The facility utilizes a 2N UPS redundancy configuration, ensuring that power remains constant even during a component failure. Additionally, N+1 backup generators are on-site, capable of supporting the data center for 36 hours at full capacity with high-speed refueling protocols. Digital Realty backs these systems with availability SLAs of up to 99.999%, providing the "five-nines" reliability required by mission-critical operations.
Environmental stability is maintained through an N+1 redundant cooling system that adheres strictly to ASHRAE recommendations for temperature and humidity. The facility is monitored 24/7 to ensure that all equipment operates within optimal thermal ranges. A standout feature is the use of remote sea water cooling, which provides a constant cooling source regardless of external weather. This ensures that the facility does not suffer from the PUE fluctuations often seen in traditional data centers during peak summer temperatures.
Security at STO2 is handled through a rigorous five-layer physical security strategy. Access is strictly controlled via Mantrap Entry, Biometric Access Control, Card Access Control, and continuous CCTV surveillance. The site is manned 24/7 by trained security and technical staff to provide immediate intervention if necessary. Furthermore, the facility is highly compliant, holding certifications for ISO 27001 (Information Security), ISO 22301 (Business Continuity), SOC 2 Type II, and is DSS PCI compliant for secure financial transactions.
Digital Realty is committed to industry-leading sustainability, utilizing 100% renewable energy for its Stockholm operations. By implementing one of the world's first seawater cooling systems in 2009, STO2 achieves an exceptionally low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). The facility also utilizes free cooling and waste heat re-use, contributing to a circular energy economy within the Kista district. This focus on green technology allows clients to meet their own ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) targets while benefiting from stable energy costs.
The facility serves as a specialized proximity hosting hub for the financial services market, connecting participants to the Burgundy Exchange, Nasdaq OMX, and London/Frankfurt hubs. To support these high-stakes operations, STO2 provides Remote Hands services, allowing clients to have routine tasks performed by on-site technical staff without traveling to the facility. Additionally, the site offers Office Space and Conference Rooms, enabling IT teams to work directly alongside their hardware during major deployments or troubleshooting sessions.
