Nigeria represents a key African market for Africa Data Centres (ADC), driven by a strong regional demand for digitization. To support this demand and enable hyperscale customers to deploy solutions across West Africa, ADC has committed to the construction of a 10-megawatt total load data centre in Lagos. This facility build marks a significant step forward in the Data Center's ambitious long-term strategy to digitize the African continent.
Africa Data Centres is utilizing a phased approach for the massive construction project, with the first phase intended to go live in mid-2021. The Nigerian data centre is set to become the West African hub for Africa Data Centres. As interconnection remains a high priority, the company will add the Lagos facility to its growing network of data centres, which currently includes sites in Johannesburg, Nairobi, Cape Town, Harare, and Kigali.
The creation of this digital hub is pivotal for enabling digital transformation capabilities within the region. Multinational enterprises will be drawn to co-locate under the same roof as hyperscale cloud providers to take advantage of lower latency. This combination of providers and enterprises transforms the data centre into a marketplace for the ecosystem and, crucially, establishes a base for the country's future digital and economic development. A key driver for this local demand is the growing importance of keeping African data on African soil.
The Lagos facility is designed for significant scale to meet future demand. When fully built out, the data centre will provide a total power capacity of 20.65 MW and 9,800 sq.m. of whitespace. To support modern, high-density IT infrastructure, the facility is designed to deliver a maximum of 20 kW of power per rack.
The data centre offers a comprehensive suite of services, including full cabinets, partial cabinets, shared rackspace, cages, suites, and remote hands. High availability is ensured through 2N UPS redundancy and N+2 cooling redundancy. The facility is protected by CCTV surveillance and an automatic fire suppression system, which uses a low-pressure gas system triggered by double-knock detection. Amenities include a Meet-Me-Room (MMR), breakroom, office space, and connectivity to 7 peering networks.
