Cellnex Netherlands Data Center

The 135-meter-high telecom and data tower in Alphen aan den Rijn is not just a vital component of the region’s digital infrastructure—it also serves as an important sanctuary for peregrine falcons. This tower is the only nesting site for these birds in the Groene Hart (Green Heart) region. Other towers in De Mortel, Zwolle, and Haarlem also host these raptors, showcasing how telecom structures can contribute to biodiversity and wildlife conservation.

In 2010, Cellnex acquired 24 towers and radio masts from KPN, including the Alphen tower. This particular tower was retrofitted to become the company’s second operational datacenter. By transforming vertical assets into datacenter facilities, Cellnex aims to expand its digital infrastructure footprint across the Netherlands.

The Alphen datacenter offers 385 square meters of usable whitespace and is designed to support high-density IT environments. With a fully built-out power capacity of 0.45 MW and a maximum of 20 kW per rack, the facility ensures optimal performance. Its energy-efficient operations are underscored by an impressive Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.2.

The datacenter employs a multi-layered security system to safeguard its infrastructure. Key measures include 24/7 CCTV surveillance, biometric access controls, and card-based entry systems, allowing only authorized personnel to access the premises.

To cater to diverse business requirements, the facility provides a range of colocation options including full cabinets, partial cabinets, shared rackspace, cages, and individual footprints. Remote hands services are also available, offering customers technical assistance without needing to be physically present.

Connectivity is ensured through one peering network and one network provider, delivering reliable and consistent communication capabilities for clients hosted within the datacenter.

The Alphen aan den Rijn tower is a remarkable example of technology and nature coexisting. It functions both as a critical digital hub and a habitat for protected peregrine falcons, representing a successful integration of ecological stewardship within the telecom and datacenter sectors.
